Some Lightning and a Doll

Allison h -

Welcome everyone to my third blog post!

This week I talked with my mentor about how the various functions connect to the factors leading into self-harm. For example, emotions associated with childhood maltreatment, like pain, confusion, and loneliness can be a lot to handle for an individual. This may lead to the “channeling overwhelming emotions” function of self-harm. However, in others, abuse may block their sense of control over their body. This may lead to self-harm as a way to regain those feelings of control.

I was also able to finish two rough sketches for my painting! My first drawing represents the need to release overwhelming emotions. It is a doll stitched together and bursting at the seams. There will be a mix of colors flowing out of areas where the seams burst, representing the release of suppressed emotions. These colors will be bright and intense, contrasting with the dolls’ muted and pastel color.

My second drawing depicts the feeling of nothing and the need to feel something, even if it’s pain. It is a shadowy, dark figure floating in a dull, blended, gray background. This represents numbness. There will also be a lightning strike of intense colors with a sharp contrast to the background, showing the regaining of feeling in the body after self-harm.

I’m glad I made the sketches to prepare for my painting, as I ended up shifting the arms and head position of the shadowy figure more times than I can count. The smudging next to the head is likely from all the erasing.

I’m excited to start transferring these sketches to my canvas. I’m hoping it will be a smooth process because of all the initial adjustments I made in my sketches.

See you next week!

Allison, I'm in awe. I wasn't sure how you were going to express such loaded topics and emotions symbolically in your pieces, but the imagery you have chosen here is incredibly smart and powerful. Those sketches look incredible so far, and the notes on them are excellent as well. How long would you say each sketch took? Looking forward to seeing these transferred onto their canvases!

Hello Allison, your rough sketches look amazing! Will you be adding descriptions for each painting, or will you leave the interpretation up to the viewer? I'm excited to see how the colors bring your sketches to life!

Hello, Allison! I love how purposeful all your choices for the paintings are. I think it is really cool how you are using color to portray different emotions. Do you have a plan on how you are going to showcase your paintings after you are finished with them?

Hey Allison, these sketches are very captivating. I know you have an idea of what colors you plan to use, but are you going to do a test paint to see which combinations you like best? I hope your transfer process goes well!

Hi Danielle! I don't know the exact time I spent on each, but the doll sketch took roughly 1 hour and the shadowy figure sketch took roughly 3 hours. For my shadowy figure sketch, I spent quite a while adjusting arm, leg, and head positions which is why it took so much longer.

Hey Nick! With such a serious and heavy topic like self-harm, I really don't want my painting to convey the wrong message, like encouraging self-harm, so I will be adding descriptions for each painting. I want it to be fully clear that these paintings are meant to educate and raise awareness.

Hello Kathy! I will definitely be showcasing my finished paintings during the senior project presentations, however I am still not sure what I will be doing with them afterwards.

Hi Cason! I will be painting tiny samples of my colors on a separate paper to fully ensure I am happy with the colors together. However, I won't be spending too much time on this because it's fairly easy to adjust the colors of acrylic paint and cover up sections I am not happy with.
