Week 7: Galamundi is expanding!

Mae b -

This week, I have some news to share! GalaMundi is expanding to a bigger, better location! If you remember from some of my previous posts, GalaMundi used to be in a larger space and have different classes for different age groups. When the pandemic hit, they had to go to an in-home preschool model and reduce the number of students they take on. Now, excitingly, after a lot of searching and waiting and wondering, they have a new space lined up: the Trinity Heights United Methodist Church!

I am excited about this because Trinity Heights is right by my house (I can see it from my backyard). I walk my dog through the parking lot all the time to get to the trail behind the church. It is cool that GalaMundi will be coming so close to my home.

Trinity Heights had a few preschools operating out of their building in the past, but there hasn’t been one there for a few years now. Elsa was able to get the space (yay!), and fortunately, it already has some of what she will need. It has two nice outdoor playgrounds and some furnishings in the classrooms.

Elsa is working on getting what she needs into the classrooms and turning them into Reggio Emilia and HighScope fashion so the curriculum needs will be met. Meanwhile, she is working on getting teachers for all of the classrooms and getting students to fill her planned four classrooms: infants, ages 1-2, ages 3-4, and Pre-K. There is some age overlap in the classrooms to leave room for putting students in a classroom depending on where they are in their learning journey. There will still be 10 kids per classroom and 2 teachers per class, so overall 8 teachers + Elsa (she is going to rotate between the kids).

GalaMundi is hoping to move into the new space in three or four weeks, but really, it depends on when the city and other legal powers-that-be get all of their paperwork approved. I am hoping I will get to spend some time in it before my internship ends!

Here are photos of the classroom for Pre-K (ages 4-5). I’ll share some more photos of the other 3 classrooms in coming posts!

Wow that's amazing! Do you think you’ll continue working in bilingual education or early childhood language learning after this project? Somehow that is exactly how I thought the classroom would look like.

Me too! It is exactly my mental picture of a preschool classroom. I don't think I'll go full-time into education of any kind as a career, but I will definitely stay involved. I've done a lot of work with kids throughout high school, and I'll continue that in college.

That's great news! The space in the pictures looks like it will be awesome for the kids. By how much will the total number of students be expanding? Thanks!

Thanks for asking. Currently there are 10 kids of various ages. In the new building, there will be 40 kids. So 30 new students are coming to GalaMundi!

Yay, that is amazing news! With everything moved to the new location, what will happen to the previous location?

The previous location was just a large back room of Elsa's house and her backyard, so I assume she will convert it back into a living space for her family!
