Heart of Man’s Best Friend:introduction

Joseph g -

Hi everyone! My name is Joseph G, and I’m a senior at BASIS Flagstaff. My project will examine how elevation affects common cardiomyopathy in Boxers and Great Danes. I chose this project because I’ve always loved animals, having grown up with dogs, cats, horses, goats, and even geese for a bit. My childhood with animals has inspired me to want to be a veterinarian. Therefore, I have chosen to do my senior project on this subject and an internship with a veterinarian in Flagstaff.

The internship: I will intern at Aspen Veterinary Clinic for ten hours a week. I don’t know precisely what I will be doing during my time there, but I will probably spend most of my time shadowing one of the doctors, Dr. Gabelt. I chose this place for my internship because I wanted to get practical field experience before committing to veterinary medicine in college. Shadowing one of the doctors at this clinic will help with my paper and research for my project and will also give me the practical experience I need.

Project: I am looking into how elevation affects how often cardiomyopathy appears in Boxers and Great Danes. I will use a survey to collect information from owners and clinics to obtain enough data to analyze and find a possible statistical difference between elevations. I may not be able to get much information from clinics since there are HIPAA laws for dogs as well (who knew?). Because of the HIPAA laws, all information I get will have to be de-identified, so whether I can get any information depends on the clinic.

In the case that I cannot get any data from the clinic, I will be posting flyers containing a QR-code that links to a survey so that I can question owners directly. The survey contains questions about the dog including  medical history, age, and exercise level, but will have no identifiable information about the owners in order to prevent any issues surrounding data collection.

Here is the flyer I will be using (this one links to the flagstaff survey if anyone wants to distribute it):

Thank you all for reading! I’m excited for you all to follow along on this journey with me!

Hi Joseph! Your project is super interesting! How do you plan on distributing the flyers, will you be posting them in the clinic or in other locations as well? Did you have to do an IRB for your survey? Thanks! - Kei

I plan on posting them in all the clinics in flagstaff as well as contacting clinics down in phoenix to try and put a different version of the survey down there. This will help me maximize the amount of responses I get because it is not a super common issue.

I did have to do an IRB for the survey but just for consent of using the information gathered mostly because the survey is not collecting any information about the people themselves so is less of a concern.

Wow! This sounds fun. What exactly is a cardio myopathy, and could you provide an example? How did you decide on dogs over cats (or any other common household pet)? I can't wait to hear more about this, and I'm excited to hear about your internship at the clinic!

Cardiomyopathy is a condition more common in larger dog breeds where the muscle tissue grows too thick and as a result of this begins to stiffen and become unable to pump as efficiently. I’ll probably go into a bit more detail on this week’s post though. I chose dogs just because I’ve had more experience with them(having dogs myself) and so I was more interested in them initially.

Really interesting project! What made you settle on specifically Boxers and Great Danes for your dog breeds?

Great Danes and Boxers were chosen because they both are vulnerable to Cardiomyopathy and so when I chose the disease, which I chose because it sounded the most interesting out of the various ones I looked at, those two breeds made the most sense to check because they were vulnerable

This sounds great! What are HIPAA laws? I'm not familiar with any legal things yk.

Always good to see a project dedicated to our animal friends! What makes you suspect that elevation might have an influence on this particular conditions in dogs?
