Crossing the finish line.

Helllo everybody, and welcome back to my final blog post.
It is crazy that we are already done it seems like we just started, honestly.
but here we are.
So to recap my research question was “How does Elevation affect dog Breeds Predisposed to Heart Disease?” I was analyzing this question through a survey that targeted pet owners in Flagstaff and Phoenix. The two breeds I chose specifically were Boxers and Great Danes, two large dog breeds that are overrepresented for various heart issues, for example, cardiomyopathy. The survey was spread on various online dog-focused forums and placed in various veterinary clinics and on outside trails and dog parks. Pretty much anywhere I believed dog owners would be likely to frequent.
I only got 9 pet owners to respond and 11 data points. 8 of those data points were from Flagstaff, and 2 of them had heart issues while 3 data points were from Phoenix, and 0 had heart issues. Now this is obviously no representative of the populations which is where I ran into issues. I also did not have enough responses to run a two-proportion z-interval test, which was another issue, or at least a proper z-interval test. I did all the math anyway and found that the proportion varies from (.04, .70). Now, this does technically show a significant difference; however, because of the low sample size, it is not reliable.
Additionally, my stats calculations also found a significant difference between the proportion of pure-bred dogs and mixed-breed dogs, which means if I had more responses and my findings did not change, I still would not be able to show a correlation.
THis of course means my study was inconclusive so :(.
But I also had an internship. That I didn’t really enjoy that much. I was shadowing so i wasn’t allowed to do much but it was still a lot more boring then i expected. I thought i’d be more interested and while there were cool moments i didn’t enjoy the environment too much. So it might not be the right career path for me. But it was still a valuable experience and I learned a lot during my time there and learned it was not right for me before college so I don’t have to waste money on a degree I’m not in love with.
But that’s it so I’ll see everyone tonight for my final presentation.
until next time.
