Updates and Fun Facts

Catherine f -

Hello! This week is more editing! I have been staring at a computer for so long but it’s fun to learn a new program. I’ve used various Adobe products before but never Adobe Premiere so it’s been interesting figuring out how it works. I have most of the clips compiled and have been cutting them and putting them over audio as pictured below. (I once again considered throwing my computer at a wall but my best friend threatened it with a ✨tiny hammer✨ and it continued working)

That’s probably going to be the next few weeks, tedious but fun, as I continue cutting the clips and cleaning it up. I have also been preparing for interviews, making sure I have a consistent space and trying to get the word out and schedule meetings. I’m hoping to have most interviews done by the beginning of April but we shall see.

I don’t have any other updates so here’s a fun fact. I showed Sam the film The Thing and she loved it. We both then watched videos on the practical effects in which they used all sorts of tricks to get it to work. One interesting effect was where someone’s stomach opened and for that they used jelly, bubble gum, and melted plastic in order to create an organism that looked real. It took a lot of work and they also only got one chance to do the shot correctly because they then set it on fire. Isn’t that cool?!

They also used reverse photography, shooting a scene where they retracted tentacles from a creature so that when reversed it looks like they were lashing out. The Thing is a great movie with interesting and impressive practical effects that a lot of people believe still hold up today.

Thank you so much for reading my post!

Hi Catie, There's nothing like learning a new program! Your comment about practical effects made me realize I've never considered different types of effects outside of "special" effects. What's the difference? Are there others? What's most common in the horror genre? Thanks!

Hello, that’s a great question! Practical effects are the physical effects and CGI is digital and computer generated effects. Older horror like The Thing relied on practical effects because CGI wasn’t popularized yet or at the current level. As far as what’s most common I’m not sure. Horror is one of the few genres that still uses a lot of practical effects but a lot of modern movies in general use more CGI. I personally prefer practical effects because even if it isn’t a photo realistic monster, it is real as it is physical and there. I think it adds something to a movie that CGI can’t replicate and is really interesting to see how it is accomplished.

Hi Catie! I want to hear more about the you vs. your computer lore now haha :) Hopefully the ✨tiny hammer✨ continues to work! I wanted to ask about your interviews; what type of information do you want to collect, and do you know what types of question you're going to be asking? Thank you!

Hi Cindy! For interviews I am mostly aiming to collect responses from people who have an interest in horror about their reasons and experiences with the genre. I have a list of ten questions that I plan to ask to hopefully show viewers the variety of different people that enjoy the genre and their differing reasons and perspectives as well as how they think the genre effects our society. Most questions are very broad so that interviewees can answer with however much detail they are comfortable with and can give their own perspectives more easily. Thank you for the question! (I too hope the ✨tiny hammer✨ continues to work)

Hi Catie! What's the most challenging part about editing with Adobe Premiere so far? Is it much different than other programs you have used?
      catherine_f
Hi Katie! So far the hardest part has been just trying to figure out how to do certain actions like clipping and adding in titles. I’ve never used video editing software like it so it’s a lot of googling actions and icons. As far as anything having to do with color correction, those tools are a lot like Adobe Lightroom which I have used.

Hi Catie! How much of the final product are you aiming to be interviews?

Hi Catie, Do modern movies still use practical effects, or is it mainly CGI nowadays?
      catherine_f
Hi Liam! Horror does still use practical effects and is one of the only genres that still uses them consistently. However, since the widespread use of CGI it is less. Most modern movies use CGI and sometimes barely any practical effects anymore.
