The Final Step in a Movie.

Post-Production

With the senior research project coming to an end, I have moved on to the final step of making a short film, being post-production. Post-production is the stage following filming where content is assembled and edited. It mostly involves editing, reshoots, and color editing. For my project, the post-production stage will mostly involve editing and animation.

The editing process composes of video editing, sound design, visual effects, and color correcting. Each component is vital for any short film and helps breach the vision from the screen to the audience.

Video editing involves arranging clips and content to create a cohesive storyline and film. This is the most important and basic part of editing, as any film involves formatting scenes and acts together to create a complete film. Video editing involves a multitude of components such as trimming clips, transitions, inputting subtitles and intertitles, or cropping clips.

Sound design is arguably the second most important part of editing. Regardless on what type of movie, whether it be a short film or a silent film, every movie involves sound design. Sound design is the act or arranging sound effects, music, and other components to create a audio that elevates a film. In most films put out today, sound design can include musical scores, sound effects, dialogue, and more. In silent films where dialogue isn’t utilized, musical scores and sound effects were still important and used for the film. Without it, media wouldn’t have any substance for the audiences to hear.

Visual effects is the use of advance editing to create artificial effects that elevate a scene. It involves a variety of tools such as greenscreens, CGI, and more. Although mostly used in genres such as fantasy, horror and action, visual effects are slowly becoming a necessary tool needed in any media produced by Hollywood.

Color correcting might not be a necessary tool, but it is one that if mastered correctly, can elevate any scene shown on the screen. Color correcting involves shifting the color hues of a scene to match the intended vision and produce an altered scene towards the audiences. Mostly done with editing software, color correcting is used in every film in the current day and can help imply certain themes and messages for the audience. For example, a horror-like scene may utilize cool and dark colors while a happy scene may utilize warm and bright colors. Each shift helps portray an underlining message to the audiences.

Final Thoughts

Although I will try to utilize all the components mentioned in this blog for editing, the truth is that I’m a novice when it comes to editing. I don’t have much experience or knowledge in sound design or color correcting, and as such will not be using it a lot during my film.

The editing software I will be using is DaVinci Resolve. It’s a free software and contains powerful editing tools that will be perfect for the film I am making.
