Intro (End of Senior Year): How to Make a Hit Song

Maya P -

Hi everyone, and welcome to my senior project!

My name is Maya Pousson, and my project involves finding efficient tools for producing a hit song in the 21st century. As I have developed as a singer-songwriter and music producer, the process and science of music creation have become more and more interesting to me. Looking at the charts of this year I began to think, “What is the science behind a hit song? Can you craft a song in a way that sets it up for commercial success?” which led me down the path to my senior research project topic. Over the next few months, I will research different existing methods behind making music as well as the science behind audio, music, and sound in creating an experience that becomes a hit. I will be researching current trends in the industry and spending about 5-6 weeks looking at the top 10 hit pop songs for the year, recording similarities, and dissecting each song into its most valuable tools. For the last 3-4 weeks, I will apply the most common similarities and tools used in these hit songs to my own produced song as a final product.

I hope you’ll stick around to hear the final song and learn all about the processes of songwriting and music creation with me! Feel free to leave your favorite pop song in your comment along with any questions.

See you next week! Oh, and before I forget- the song of the week!

I love that you have a song of the week. Great idea! What kind of software do you use for producing music?

Thank you! I use a variety of Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). DAWs are application software used for recording, editing, and producing audio/music. Some DAWs I've used include Audacity, GarageBand, and FL Studio. My favorite right now is BandLab because of its user accessibility and short learning curve, as well as its many tools available for free. :)
