Project Title: Finding the X-Factor: The Scientific Formula Behind Song Success
BASIS Advisor: Jada Genter
Internship Location: Music Makers Workshop
Onsite Mentor: Cindy Weir

Project Abstract

Is there a formula to creating a hit pop song? It seems like more chart-topping songs sound similar day by day and employ techniques that aid them in reaching top numbers. Songs use many different tools to achieve success. Different aspects of songs such as beats, songwriting and lyrics, and melodies and audio all play unique roles in the experience of a song. Songs with particular rhythmic and melodic characteristics tend to have higher levels of success in the industry. There aren't many sources connecting hit music and the science behind the musicality of the creation. Musical success explained scientifically could aid in understanding the critical success of artists and how to replicate it and use specific musical tools as an advantage in the market. I look at the top 10 pop songs on the charts in the last year and research the different tools and techniques in common between the songs. My project combines the structural creation of music with the creative final product of a song employing a few of the most critical tools I uncover in my research. My site placement is fitting because I have the resources and guidance to research the musicality and science of songs, as well as be mentored throughout the process of employing these tools in my own produced song product. After my research, I hope to answer if there is a formula to creating a hit song and what tools and techniques are involved in the biggest pop hits of this year.
