Week 5: And we’re almost there!

Tais M -

Hey guys! Week 5! That’s crazy and intimidating. We’re halfway through! Sorry for the title but I’ve had all the Princess and the Frog songs stuck in my head all week.

This week has been organizational. So far, I’ve been taking more notes on my sources and trying to put together a timeline to help me organize how Maternal Mortality has been changing in DC.

As you know I’ve been reading MMRC reports. There have been 3 so far. The 2019-2020 report, 2021 report, and 2022 report. I couldn’t find any since then which made me very confused and upset. But I recently realized that the 2022 report was published in 2023. The amount of time it takes to gather and process this data is important and explains in part why the annual reports are behind. This considerable delay in readily available information for the public on the crisis is crucial as it impacts how promptly responses to MMR changes are made.

Also, my aggravation at not having more recent reports has made me realize, only more acutely, how important publicized reports, data, and analyses are for the populace. This is especially paramount now. Some CDC sites I visited earlier this school year no longer have information available, and I am even more grateful for what little information I kept, or I can find.

And while I have been sketching and even downloading editing things, I am no less intimidated by the task. I realize I have never truly edited a video without using a recording I made, which is not really an option. However, I swear to you, come hell or high water, I will try and do something tomorrow.

Lastly, I’ve been gathering some names for interviews, which I will be discussing with my internship advisor, and hopefully get some great in person (or only email) answers to all the questions I have.

Ok, that was a lot. Have a great week! Bye!

Always love your posts! It's so annoying that there is such a lack of MMRC information, you would think that data is more readily available and organized in an efficient way but guess not. Must be run by men. Good luck in all your video editing, that can be a very challenging thing to learn!

Good luck video editing, I hope it goes smoother than our mandarin videos! Data reporting is so important, I've come across similar issues when looking through epidemic data for my project.

So scary we're so far along! It's crazy how these projects and all the research have given us a firsthand view of the damage being done to research and information in the US right now. Love to see your dedication through so many complications and hurdles.
