Week 4: Present and Absent
As a non-creative person, trying to think of a new title name for these blog posts has been very challenging. So, I’m glad that I still have some title ideas in me! This week, I decided to stray away from funding and focused more on attendance rates since a major problem in DC has been students not showing up for school. No matter how high quality a school is, if the students are not showing up, the school will not be able to be fully utilized.
Through my research, I found that people who are chronically absent from school can be registered in two charts: Absenteeism and Truancy. Chronic Absenteeism is categorized as when students are absent for 10% of their enrolled instructional days, while Chronic Truancy is categorized as having accrued at least 10 unexcused absences in a given school year.
Within the School Year 2022-2023, high school has the highest percentage of students with Chronic Absenteeism and Truancy. This is also reflected in their academic performance. Students who are absent for more than 20% of their school year have an average decrease in their ELA PARCC (now DC CAPE) scores throughout their years in high school. As PARCC (now DC CAPE) is a standardized test, their lower scores mean they perform less than the expected outcome.
On a more personal note, I completed a 1,000-piece puzzle this week! It completely broke my back as I was slouched for over 10 hours. But I am too proud not to share it with my senior blog audience. So here you all go!

See yall next week and hopefully the titles keep coming😊,
