Week Five: The Fifth Ingredient

Leah B -

Hiii All! Welcome back!

This week of my senior project has been both productive and chill.

As a continuation of last week, I completed interviews with two women who work at Call Your Mother, and they were great! One of them was definitely more talkative, as she’s in charge of vendors and maintaining good relationships with them, but both conversations were super insightful. Their answers not only helped me understand their day-to-day responsibilities but also offered valuable input that ties directly into certain aspects of my project.

Beyond the interviews, I’ve purchased the ingredients for my blind taste tests and have started mapping out my next steps as I prepare for the experiment. I’m really looking forward to seeing if people can tell which baked goods include a substitute and whether they can identify what that substitute is. I’ve done quite a bit of research to find a recipe that aligns with the focus of my project, including sourcing a new “control” recipe so that even people who’ve tried my baking before won’t recognize it right away.

Lastly, to give you a peek into what working at the shop is like, here are some of the tasks/jobs I’ve been given:
• Cashier
• Expo (packaging orders and calling out customer names)
• Inventory and ordering swag based on numbers I collected
• Laminating staff guides for menu items and ingredients
• Scooping and weighing cream cheese for both in-store and catering use
• Prepping for catering orders by folding boxes, organizing sides, and gathering utensils and cups

Thanks for tuning in! Have a great week!!
