Week 6 – Rework and Rewrite

Jude S -

I have been extremely optimistic with this week. I have been starting to fill up my script and I’m looking closer towards production. This doesn’t mean I’m done with pre-production. It’s arguable if pre-production is ever over until you’re in post-production since you always have to plan the next day. Currently, my biggest struggle is casting, but I do have a backup plan for a way that one actor could play a bunch of the roles. Sets are also an issue, but I plan on utilizing suspension of disbelief and set dressing to hopefully make one set seem enough like another. A lot of the story takes place in an office, so slight differences in detail but the same general look to each room isn’t too farfetched. There is also a clear fantastical element to my story, so creating props may be a challenge, but hopefully, I can create good practical effects to make editing easier.

My mentor and I have been discussing rewrites and reworks of the plot. I have also been helping her with her own project trying to adapt her script to a graphic novel in order to pitch it better. The plot rework on my end is adding an antagonist for the character who works in the cosmic bureaucracy instead of just having the system be the antagonist. The change works well since it adds stakes and makes his character arc more natural as his goal is to bring order, so he shouldn’t be as at odds with the bureaucracy. This addition will require some more work on rewriting the script, but I believe it’ll make the final project better.

My film recommendation of the week is Throne of Blood (1957).

Hi Jude, I've loved seeing your project come to life so far! Do you think you will rely heavily on digital editing/graphics, or do you prefer to keep the footage more raw?

Hi Jude all of this seems like a lot of work but very fun! Do you feel like set design/prop design has been a pretty time consuming process? I feel like that is an art in itself!

Hi Adhip! I prefer to get more done practically since, in my few experiences, relying on editing takes more time than figuring out a solution to do it for real (for small productions at least). Also, editing is a skill I frankly need the most work on, so I try to not use it as my main solution at this point.

Hello Elle! Set design definitely takes time and there are a lot of sacrifices and compromises that it requires. For this particular project besides the props that don't directly exist in real life, it hasn't been too time-consuming. The costuming may become an issue, however, but for now, sets are my main concern. I am lucky that my story takes place in an office, so a lot of the sets can be dull on purpose!
