Week 10: Noises Galore

Ashley J -

This week at the children’s museum was the busiest I have ever seen. Because of Good Friday and Easter Weekend, there was an insane amount of people there which made our lives so busy, but so much fun.

Thursday was a normal field trip morning with exhibits in the afternoon. There were two schools that came for field trips and they were so much fun! I helped with “Noisy Science” again but this time we did it a little bit differently. We still talked about sound waves and how sound travels, but instead of the cup noisemakers, we made sound sandwiches.

We took popsicle sticks, rubber bands, and straws to create a similar instrument to a kazoo or harmonica. We talked about how they worked; when we blow between the popsicle sticks, the rubber band vibrates and makes the noises we hear. It sounds similar to a kazoo or as one of the students put it “the sounds that my mommy’s toothbrush makes.”

The other school did “Desert Dwellers” and we had a blast with desert yoga and definitely fell over a few times while balancing on one foot as we became beautiful Palo Verdes.

Friday was the busiest day I have ever seen. There were so many people at the museum that it took me five minutes to make my way across the museum when it normally takes me about thirty seconds.

I started the morning with a field trip group where we did “Power Up” again and this group was so smart! They were first graders and their teachers had prepared them incredibly well for their lesson plan, because they knew the answer to so many of our questions. They knew all about circuits and the different kinds of renewable energy. Their favorite was definitely wind energy because they could blow air into each other’s faces and make their hair fly up in the air.

After we were done with field trips, I got to help with one of my favorite programs: WEE Happy. This week we didn’t really have a specific topic. We just read books, danced to music, and did a craft. We read the book “If You Plant A Seed” by Kadir Nelson. This book talked all about sharing and included some of the yummy fruits and vegetables that we grow at the museum. We then danced sour heart outs to “Mr. Golden Sun” which arguably has one of the greatest saxophone solos of all time in it, so I’d definitely give it a listen if you haven’t before. For our craft, we did circle painting. We took paint, small cups and empty paper towel rolls to make circles or bubbles. I have to say that my art skills have definitely improved since I started my internship.

This week I have been working incredibly hard to get my painting done and to include the plethora of activities and experiences that I have helped with and been able to experience.

That’s all for this week! See you on our next adventure!

Hey Ashley, wow you had a super busy week! Does the children's museum ever close for holidays, or do you just have to power through the busy days? Also, do you know how big your painting is going to be or what materials it will be made out of?

Sounds like another busy week! Have you reached the point where you are able to recognize students' names, or are there different kids coming in each day?

Wow! Five minutes to cross instead of 30 seconds sounds like a lot! I don't mean to be this person, but my curiosity escapes me. Have there ever been any emergency drills at the museum during your time there? Did you receive any instruction or training for such a situation?
