Anthony A -

Hello, everyone. My name is Anthony Akator, and I am deeply honored and excited to share this experience with you.

My research project endeavors to understand how state and local policymakers and communities can combat the fentanyl epidemic. The unprecedented growth of fentanyl consumption has had deeply negative consequences for both public health and national security in the United States.

The potency of fentanyl combined with an American public still reeling from the opioid crisis has produced a situation in which public health officials are scrambling to protect Americans from themselves. Conversely, the fentanyl epidemic has also presented many problems for American national security as the production and sale of fentanyl involves many transnational criminal organizations, threatening the safety of Americans across the country particularly in communities near the southern border.

Pima County in particular has been enormously harmed by the fentanyl epidemic and the lingering effects of that harm is the key motivation for this project. The project goal for this research paper is to develop policy recommendations and a local strategy for Pima County and Arizona to address the fentanyl epidemic and strengthen their ability to combat organized crime and illicit narcotics. One of the critical components of this research project is how the United States and Mexico can collaborate to curb the spread of fentanyl.

This is where my internship in collaboration with the University of Arizona comes into play. Working with political science students at the U of A and the Florence Project to transcribe and interpret documents for immigrant communities will bolster America’s integral relationship with Mexico while improving my understanding of the security collaboration between the two nations. Furthermore, through analyzing these documents I hope to understand how subnational actors across the southern border have worked together to address the spread of illicit narcotics.

Through conducting this research, I hope to propel my academic and professional interest in public policy and international affairs. My ambition is to become a federal prosecutor and the public servant our community deserves, and I hope my research is a foundational step in that process.

Thank you for your time, and I look forward to spending the next few months with you.

Hey TJ, the work you've presented in AP Research has already wowed me, and I'm excited to see how you will bring your research further with your site placement! What type of immigrant documents will you be analyzing?

Hey Therese, thank you for your question. The documents mainly concern government policy regarding illegal migrants and movement on the southern border.

TJ, I am excited about the work you will be doing with the Florence Project and interested to learn more about its applications to your project. Your research should prove helpful in helping policymakers think through the difficulties of the fentanyl crisis and prove valuable for our local community here in Pima County. Keep up the good work! Hi TJ, Your project has always interested me in AP Research and I'm quite excited to hear about it through these blogs as well. Your site placement seems like it'll be very helpful in your research, how do you hope to use these documents in your development of policy recommendations? Good luck and good work! - Erin R.

Good afternoon Erin. I plan to analyze how these documents reflect the effectiveness of government migration policy and then create policy recommendations that positively affect that policy dimension.

Hey Anthony, I'm excited to see how your project develops. Recently, President Trump has been emphasizing a need for cooperation between the US, Canada, and Mexico to address fentanyl trafficking into America. Obviously, as you mentioned in your post, subnational actors and international relations go hand-in-hand, so I'm wondering, do you plan to address to what degree do local organizers and actors have to be aware of (or involved in) US IR to be successful in achieving their goals? I may be jumping the gun with my question, but hopefully, it's still relevant.

Hi Anthony! Your project sounds incredibly impactful and timely. I appreciate how you’re tackling both the public health and national security aspects of the fentanyl epidemic, especially with a focus on Pima County and cross-border collaboration. What specific policy changes do you think would be most effective in addressing fentanyl trafficking at the local level? I’m excited to see where your research takes you!

Hi TJ! I love the work your doing, and think it is incredibly important especially as lacing becomes more prominent. In your opinion, do you think small-scale help for those already addicted (such as rehab or methadone clinics) is an effective way to combat this epidemic? Or does the highly addictive qualities and low rate of recovery prevent these communities from benefitting from efforts such as this? Your project seems to focus more on persecuting distributors and not users, so this may be out of the bounds of your project, but I'm curious on your thoughts.

Thank you so much for your kind words, Josie! To answer your questions, yes I do believe small scale services such as rehab are critical to addressing this problem.

Thank you so much for your question, Emily. While I have not completed my research and will likely give a more constructive comment, I believe that state and local actors should strengthen relations with regional partners (such as Mexico and Latin America) to address this crisis. I will try to give a more descriptive answer in the future.

Excellent question, Arjun! Subnational actors ought to increase their awareness of international relations and become active participants in it. The "how" of that question is my project and I hope to illuminate that subject matter soon.

And as always, I appreciate your support, Dr. Kearl!
