Introduction

Azumi V -

Hello! My name is Azumi Valencia and I am a senior at BASIS Tucson North.

For my senior project, I have decided to research health disparities that immigrant women face in Southern Arizona. Living in Tucson, it’s impossible to ignore the glaring issues that this city has with its treatment of immigrants. Especially in the current political climate, being an immigrant is terrifying, as basic rights continue to be stripped away. Specifically in healthcare, women and people of color receive disproportionate care, an issue that stems from a lack of medical research, personal bias, and medical school curriculums. I hope to analyze where these problems stem from, how they impact people in the real world, and what can be done to combat this issue. Beyond just research, I plan to interview and talk with people impacted by this national issue in order to amplify their voices. This issue is significant as it impacts hundreds of thousands of people, and is especially prominent in a city like Tucson, with its large population of immigrants. Coupled with an internship through Tucson Spotlight, a local journalism non-profit, I hope to be able to shed light on the major issue that is health inequities. This internship will help to guide my research as I will be writing stories and creating other forms of content. Ultimately, I hope to create a landing page showcasing all my research and stories. I hope to write stories that are educational and are able to expose the problems that exist in healthcare.

Hey Azumi! This is such an important topic to be studying right now. That's so cool that you'll be working with a journalism organization! Will you be helping write articles for them?

Hi Azumi! It is great that you’ll be delving into this issue and trying to find the cause so that a solution can be created! Are there potentially language barriers to your study? How do you plan to overcome them?

I love how you're combining research with real-life stories to highlight health disparities. Have you thought about the types of questions you’ll ask in your interviews to capture those personal experiences?

This topic is so relevant right now and I'm excited to read all about your work! Do you know how you will be finding people to interview?

Yes, I will be! I'll hopefully write a couple stories and maybe delve into audio and visual types of reporting as well!

Thank you! I'm currently looking into local U of A groups and have also been connected with people at Tucson Spotlight who research similar topics, who can hopefully connect me to more people!

Hi Sophia! I do definitely think there will be a language barrier. I know that I can understand Spanish pretty well, and plan to record any conversations so I can slow them down or ask for help for things I don't quite understand. Hopefully my AP Spanish can help me when it comes to speaking, and I'll definitely have questions written out in both languages.

Hi Telsi! Thanks! I definitely want to ask people's financial and personal experiences with Tucson hospitals/doctor but as for specific questions I think its a case by case basis.
