Building Communities: Final Touches

Vera M -

Hello everyone! Welcome back to one of my last blogs!

This one truly has me tearing up after I spent the last few months interning with the best doctor and people.

Working at Casa Maria Soup Kitchen, meeting so many incredible people, and helping the unhoused community has left a permanent mark on my heart. I didn’t expect to grow so attached, not just to the work itself, but to the individuals I met, the stories I heard, and the lessons I learned.

When I first started, I thought I was there just to help distribute food or collect trash. But it became so much more than that. I learned that even small acts of kindness, like offering someone a clean pair of socks or sitting down to listen to their story, can mean the world to someone who feels invisible. I learned that the barriers people face are so much deeper and more complicated than they seem on the surface. It was never just about a lack of shelter, but about a lack of dignity, opportunity, and support.

I was so grateful for this Opportunity, and I can not wait to continue helping my community.
