002 : How Many Problems We Got?

Komla W -

A LOT!

YOYOYO! It’s K to the L to the W, and you know what time it is… BLOG TIME!

This week wasn’t as chill as the first week. Although, the week started in a chill manner.  I was thrown into the pool’s deep end after I met with my mentor. But, Luckily I know how to swim

1. First Problem

In the meeting with my mentor, we discussed how the scoring would go and he had me run a sample of how I would score the videos. In his words “respectfully, Lucas you’re wrong, and this wont work”.  I was like well damn I guess I got to find a new way to mark these videos. With his help and expertise, he taught me a better way to organize the Excel sheet in a manner that would help me score the videos more easily. After our meeting, I began scoring videos using this newfound technique I had learned but, I ran into another problem the videos were too quick.

2. Second Problem

I had to find editing software that would allow me to slow down the video so I could correctly score instead of guessing whether the rat missed the string, bit the string, or missed a pull, I think you get the point. So my solution to this problem was using my iPad and downloading the videos and editing them on Lumafusion with that software i was able to stretch out the video and go through the video frame by frame to score the video.

3. Third Problem

It’s going to take a long time.

But that’s, everything I got for yall today,

-KLW OUT!

What's good Lucas! I'm sorry to hear that this week has not been as chill as the last one, but I am really proud of you for responding to these problems and creating solutions to them. You are a really smart guy and I'm sure that next week will go by much easier! Do you have any plans to solve the problem of all of this taking a long time? I wish you good luck, and you got this!

How was your advisors scoring technique so different from your own technique?

Hey Lucas! I'm sorry to hear about your recent challenges in your project, but I'm glad that you were able to find solutions to a couple of them. What was the new technique that you learned from your mentor?

Hello Lucas! Sounds like a long week, but you got this! How was the new technique better than your old technique?

This will sound awful BUT I am so happy to hear you are struggling! A true research experience is always filled with tiny setbacks that you must work through and it is always a good thing to work through them in a setting with less pressure - like your senior project - to really find out if this field of work is for you. I am happy to also hear you are conquering these challenges by working with your advisor! Oftentimes it is tempting to hide your mistakes or "guess whether the rat missed the string" etc., but I have found that this will always set you back more than simply admitting your faults and working with others to find a solution. Good luck with your new technique!

Hi Herron! Thank you for such kind words!

Hello Karthik! So he made a few changes to my spreadsheet that would be used for scoring, which was much easier than I had planned. Each action was separated into different events. Although it sounds simple, I thought my role was just to count the amount of action. But it was to analyze each action. Thank you for your comment Karthik

Mr. Mann, hello! Just as I was telling Karthik, we made a few changes to the spreadsheet to make the scoring easier, I'll show you guys a photo in the next blog!

HI Connor! I could make this take shorter time, I would, but I don't think there is a was to cut down on watching videos frame by frame.

Hi Vera! Just like I told Mr. Mann and Karthik, we made a few changes to the spreadsheet I was using so each event was its own separate action.

Hello Ms. Kozlowska! I really appreciate your kind remarks. It might be easy to say, "Oh, I suppose they touched the string," but having the ability to view the video frame by frame is incredibly helpful, as it allows me to see whether they completed the action without having to guess. Thank you again for your comment!
