Week 11: Wrapping Things Up
Emma H -
Hello everyone! I can’t believe this is my final blog. This internship has been such a rewarding and unforgettable experience. I’m so thankful for the support from the library staff and especially my mentors, who guided me whenever I felt unsure.
Even though it’s the last week, I stayed busy wrapping up my senior project. I spent more time working on my presentation and was able to review it with my mentor, Ms. Evans. She gave me great feedback! She thought the presentation was solid overall but pointed out that I was a bit vague when answering my research question: “How can large-scale art displays encourage children and teens to engage with reading?” She also recommended I focus more on explaining my creative process, including my sketching, design choices, and painting. I’ll be incorporating all of that into my conclusion slide to better answer the question.
One of the most exciting parts of this week was finishing my final 3D display! Last week, I mentioned that I didn’t like how the first version turned out. This time, I used cardstock instead of the foam board, and the results were much cleaner. I found a YouTube tutorial from an architecture student who folded and glued paper edges to create sharp, seamless corners. I followed their method and it worked perfectly! The structure alone took about 4 hours to complete, but it was worth it.
Next came the painting. I kept the brown from my original color palette but swapped the purples for brighter, more vibrant colors to help each “book” stand out. I also switched from matte to satin paint, which gave the display a nice shiny finish.
For the final detailing, instead of painting fine gold lines by hand (which would’ve taken forever and been hard to fix if I messed up), I painted gold onto cardstock, cut out shapes and strips, and glued them on. I actually learned this technique while working on the STEAM display because it’s super efficient and looks really polished.
For the final pop of color, I added a bold red bookmark to one of the books. I think it really draws your attention and makes the display more eye-catching. I also included the stars I made during my first few weeks, since I felt like adding smaller 3D elements would help tie the whole piece together. The detailing took about five more hours to finish because I wanted to take my time and make sure I was truly happy with how everything turned out.
And since I did my internship at Woods Memorial Library, I added WOODS in gold lettering as my appreciation for them through this internship.
So overall, this new 3D display took a total of around 10 hours and I am really happy with the result!

Thank you so much for reading and all the support! <3
