SRP Week 1 Update (2/12)
Andrew K -
Hey guys! I hope everyone’s SRPs are going well. Here are some updates to my project.
This past week, I started to set up some dates to run inspection checks with the Arizona Department of Health Services to add to their database: AZ TES MAPPER. Whenever the vendors sell me a nicotine product, they receive a citation which is recorded in this database, enabling me to analyze the frequency of recorded illegal sales for every smoke/vape shop. I plan to collect this data for every smoke/vape store in Scottsdale, and then, I’ll proceed to run some statistical significance tests (like ANOVA and chi-square test for independence) to establish whether there is statistical significance between these stores and surrounding high schools.
Additionally, I also started to finalize my survey that I will send to school administration across the Scottsdale Unified School District to address the latter half of my research question: how does this statistical significance (or lack thereof) affect youth consumption of all nicotine products? Below are some questions included in my survey:
To what extent do you agree with the following statement: “Nicotine product use is common among students at my school”?
- Strongly agree
- Agree
- Neutral
- Disagree
- Strongly disagree
Is there a store near your school that sells nicotine products (e.g., vape shops, convenience stores)?
- Yes, within walking distance
- Yes, within a short drive (1-2 miles)
- No, not nearby
- I’m not sure
How easy do you think it is for students at your school to access nicotine products?
- Very easy
- Somewhat easy
- Neutral
- Difficult
- Very difficult
By combining my statistical analyses of these stores to high schools and student survey input, I’m confident I can answer my SRP research question. Look out for future updates!
Best,
Andrew Kang
