100m Dash: Week 7

Shreyaan N -

Greetings everyone!

I’m at the final stretch of my research project, making some diagrams and adding some finishing touches in and around my research paper. I also finished up my research paper brochure blog thing. Here it is below:

Overview
Prostate cancer is one of the most prevalent cancers affecting men worldwide, making early and accurate detection essential for improving patient outcomes. While Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) plays a key role in identifying suspicious prostate lesions, discrepancies between MRI findings and subsequent biopsy results pose significant diagnostic challenges.

The Research
In collaboration with leading radiologists and researchers at Mayo Clinic, this study’s focus was evaluating the percentage of patients who present Clinically Significant Prostate Cancer (csPCa) but present benign Biopsy, shedding light on the reliability of current prostate cancer diagnostic procedures. To better understand the discrepancy, I’ve examined their relevant follow-up procedures to see how their assumed csPCa develops, such as, “Is there an increase or decrease in clinical significance?”

Methodology
By conducting a retrospective analysis of 500 patient records from the EPIC healthcare database, to determine follow-up outcomes, I have extracted and analyzed the following:

    • Patient demographics (Age, Medical History)
    • MRI findings (Initial & Follow/up)
    • Biopsy/Pathology results (Initial & Follow/up)
  • Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) (Initial & Follow/up)

Through advanced statistical analysis using Python and Excel tools, I have quantified the percentage of patients who develop cancer after an initial normal biopsy and provided rationale and guidance as to why the discrepancies may have occurred and how to minimize discordance.

Impact
Our findings will contribute to refining early detection strategies, improving diagnostic accuracy, and enhancing overall csPCa management. By identifying inconsistencies in current screening protocols, this research has the potential to shape future clinical practices and optimize patient care.

That’s all I got for this week,

Catch y’all in the next one,

Shreyaan
