Week 6

Neha K -

Welcome to Week 6! This week, I wanted to talk about cryo-skin!

Recently, Hand and Stone corporate has started to introduce a new third thing in addition to the usual massages and facials: cryo-skin. Some of you may have heard of this weight-loss strategy. It’s normally done at medical spas (spas that do Botox and lip filler etc.). It works by using cold temperatures to destroy fat cells and eliminate cellulite (the extra fat that makes certain places, like your thighs, more lumpy).

In general, it helps to give your body or face a more toned and sculpted look in a non-invasive way by getting rid of extra fat.

How this helps business at the spa is that it brings in more income and a new stream of possible prospects. Although cryo-skin is the most expensive service we provide at our spa, it’s way cheaper to do it here at Hand and Stone than at any medical spa, so it brings in a lot of new clients who wouldn’t come in normally. Although the membership doesn’t cover cryo-skin fully because we have separate packages for it, clients who come in for cryo-skin are also regularly exposed to others getting massages and facials. When they hear other clients rave about their session after they come out, they tend to want to try it out as well, especially since it’s cheaper than what they are doing so far. When they go in for their own massage/facial finally, we hope they love it and sign up for a membership as well.

This is how diversifying a business’s portfolio can help it be more successful.

Great post Neha! Just a question: how can Hand and Stone effectively use cryo-skin services to boost membership?

Great post Neha! Just a question: how can Hand and Stone effectively use cryo-skin services to boost membership? Would they have to spread the word?

Hi Aanvi! When clients come in for cryo-skin services, they also see other clients getting other services done. We hope that incentivizes them to try it out themselves, like it, and get a membership for themselves.

Great post Neha! Just a question: how can Hand and Stone effectively use cryo-skin services to boost membership? Would they have to spread the word to cyro patients directly, or publicize it differently?

Thank you Aanvi! We spread the word out for cryo-skin similar to how we do massages and facials with different promotional deals being sent out regularly along with available appointments.

Love the post Neha, but how can Hand and Stone effectively use cryo-skin services to boost membership? Would they have to spread the word to cyro patients directly, or publicize it differently?

I am so sorry it said my response wasn’t going through so I clicked submit again and again, you don’t have to answer all of them just preferably the first one!

Hi Neha, I like the idea of the addition cyro-skin with the already existing facials and massages. However, since you said that cyro-skin isn't covered by the membership and in separate packages, it doesn't seem that it would directly help with increasing membership sales. Granted, cyro-skin seems to be much cheaper compared to any other place. I think that perhaps adding cyro-skin to a membership wouldn't be too bad of an idea. However, I would make it so there is a form of a premium membership due to the fact that cyro-skin is pretty expensive.

Hi Ethan! Yes, you are absolutely correct. Maybe in the future, they'll change the system to having a basic membership and a premium membership including cryo-skin. The only reason they might not have a membership for cryo-skin is because usually people don't get cryo-skin done as regularly as massages/facials. It's usually done in predetermined sets of 5 or 10, instead of once every month.

Hi Neha, great post! I have one question. Now that the Hand and Stone spa offers cryo-skin treatments, does the inflow of people seeking these treatments compensate for the investment in the technology purchased by the spa for cryo-skin treatments? Also, are memberships still as popular in the spa, or are people instead of purchasing a membership, just going in for the specific treatments they want like cryo-skin since they aren't included within memberships?

Hi Neha, this is super interesting! Does a worker with an MD perform this process or can it be done by the masseuse?

This is a cool service! Would the spa be losing any profit in hiring specialized professionals to perform these treatments and not gaining memberships from clients who are interested in the new service?

Hi Neha, would you need a licensed professional to oversee the cryo skin area?

Wow Neha! Very cool. I would imagine that those coming in for the most expensive treatment would have a larger budget than most. Do you find that this makes it easier to convert those coming in for the first time for cryo-skin treatments than regular massages?
