Project Title: Behind the Lens: Navigating the Path to Filmmaking Success
BASIS Advisor: Alison Cates
Internship Location: SAY Sí
Onsite Mentor: Alex Ramirez, Media Arts Director

Project Abstract

Breaking into the film industry can be challenging due to its highly competitive nature and limited job opportunities. My project explores the most effective steps aspiring filmmakers should take during college and beyond to establish a successful career. Through in-depth interviews with experienced filmmakers and local artists in and outside of San Antonio, I aim to gather insights on career navigation, industry challenges, and professional growth. I am choosing to conduct these interviews with people well into their career so that I acquire knowledge and advice from industry professionals. The new knowledge found while conducting my research will serve as guidance to young filmmakers/artists. This research also adds a new perspective on what it is to be a filmmaker/artist based on industry professionals’ personal experiences. I am conducting my research at SAY Sí, a nonprofit arts organization where I am a student in the Media Arts Studio department. This placement provides access to professional audio and video equipment, allowing me to document and produce high-quality content for my project. By collecting and sharing the experiences and advice of industry professionals, I hope that my research will serve as a valuable resource for emerging filmmakers, offering practical guidance on how to navigate the industry and carve out a sustainable career path.
