Project Title: BASIS Turns a New Leaf BASIS Advisor: Chris Jordan Internship Location: Oliver Wyman Management Consulting Group Onsite Mentor: Zach Robbins, Senior Consultant |
Project Abstract
Energy efficiency is among the beneficial ways in which an organization can improve. I seek to research feasible energy alternatives for our school campus, and develop an overall emissions strategy to recommend to BASIS Shavano that may improve efficiency and potentially be environmentally beneficial. If the analysis also saves costs of fuel, then the school can allocate funds towards furthering academic success or student satisfaction. I am fortunate to have a mentor and energy consultant at Oliver Wyman in Houston; this international firm is a giant in the industry of sourcing and recommending energy alternatives and efficiencies, and will be invaluable on this project to guide my research and creation of energy options and possible alternatives. The first phase of the report will be to gather relevant and comparable data relating to energy and energy consumption — kilowatt hours, demographics, and square footage to name a few of the elements I must collect for analysis — to log per capita stats. Next, I will compile the data and assess which energy alternatives are best for our school campus to consider to increase energy efficiency based on industry standards and the capital required to implement changes. Finally, I must present the findings contrasting dollars saved against costs required to upgrade, update, or adopt new energy alternatives like is done at larger schools, colleges and companies, so that the recommendations are useful to this school campus and possibly reviewed and replicated at other BASIS campuses.
Week 10 The Finale…
This week marked the final week of research and finalization I'd be doing for my project. I finalized key deliverables and deepened my final presentation. After weeks of work and refinement, I completed the final touches necessary to obtain the STAR energy report score. Securing this score represents more than just a metric, it reflects... Read More
Week 9, Summarization and Accumulation
Everything I've done over the past 8 weeks has been with the final goal in mind of delivering a final executable plan that the school can use to increase their energy efficiency, and thus lower their carbon emissions. I've now reached the point where I can begin the recommendations for the school cause of all... Read More
Week 8!
This week has been another transitional week towards completing my project. First I started with ways to problem solve the car idling problem. This involved an investigation into the viability of various interventions, ranging from informational signage and proactive email communication to the potential implementation of a designated patrol. The aim was to identify low-cost,... Read More
Week 7, Approaching the End
After receiving the macro energy data, I now have a more comprehensive understanding of consumption trends across the campus. However, while this broad data is helpful, it lacks the granularity needed to evaluate the specific energy impact of major systems, mainly appliances and HVAC. To address this, I reached out to the local director of... Read More
Week 6… Finally
This week marked a significant milestone in the ongoing energy analysis project. After several weeks of anticipation, a comprehensive dataset was finally obtained, including quarterly, monthly, and total energy usage figures for the past year, along with associated cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh). The acquisition of this data allows me to begin the next phase... Read More
Week 5 Blog, time wasted…
To begin with, I engaged in an ongoing discussion with Mr. Traore, the Director of Operations, regarding the data I require for my research. He began with that some data is still pending approval from his manager and that it would require more time. So... In the meantime, I directed my efforts toward exploring qualitative... Read More
Week 4 !!
This week marked a significant step in the progression. Despite a few delays and challenges with data acquisition, I made considerable progress in exploring alternatives. At the start of the week, I reestablished contact with Mr. Traore, who had previously agreed to provide data crucial for the project. After a reminder email, there was... Read More
Week 3 Updates and Setbacks
An eventful and results heavy week is seeming hard to come by, however I am confident in the road ahead. To start, the operations director, Mr. Traore, communicated that the data I need would be available by the end of the week, yet here I am with no helpful data for my final deliverable. Yet,... Week One Blog
This week was the initiation of everything I have to do to complete my project further down the line. I started with outlining the final deliverables and the steps I would need to accomplish these deliverables through making a final presentation skeleton. Me and my mentor came to the conclusion that the final deliverable for... Read More
