Project Title: Muscles, Medicine, and Methods: A Study of Chiropractic Therapy vs. Conventional Treatment BASIS Advisor: Veronica Vicencio Internship Location: San Antonio Muscle & Spine Clinic Onsite Mentor: Dr. Samuel Pena |
Project Abstract
Chiropractic care is often dismissed as pseudoscience, but research suggests it can enhance mobility and alleviate pain. Chronic pain and musculoskeletal injuries often limit individuals’ mobility, yet many turn to medications or invasive procedures without exploring non-invasive alternatives. This project examines the role of chiropractic care in pain management, mobility, and physical health, looking at its effectiveness compared to traditional treatments. By interning at the Muscle and Spine Clinic under Dr. Samuel Peña, I will observe patient treatments, analyze clinical methodologies, and review case studies on chiropractic interventions. My research will include patient outcomes from the clinic, a review of existing scientific literature, and an evaluation of chiropractic care’s impact on recovery and performance. With chronic pain affecting millions worldwide, the overreliance on pain medications like opioids has led to widespread addiction and long-term health complications. Exploring alternative treatments like chiropractic care is crucial in providing safer pain management options. Additionally, in the field of sports medicine, effective recovery methods are essential for athlete longevity and performance. If chiropractic adjustments can enhance mobility and aid recovery, they could reduce the need for painkillers and invasive procedures, offering a more sustainable approach to rehabilitation.
