Week 1: Breath In, Breathe Out

Zoey B -

My first week of senior project consisted of a lot of research. The main focus of my research was on different ways to deliver oxygen to a premature child. This is arguably the most important thing that technology has aided in over the years. Most premature babies will suffer from RDS or respiratory distress syndrome at some point during their stay in the N.I.C.U.. During my internship, I observed an RN taking care of two premature babies in the critical care nursery (CCN). One of those babies was on oxygen and had just been moved from an incubator to an open crib. Throughout the day, we watched his vitals and noticed that his oxygen saturation often dipped below the ideal levels. Once the RN decided that she needed to intervene, she showed me different ways to move the baby, so he would take in more oxygen through the nasal cannula. The RN also took the time to show me other devices that they use to deliver oxygen to neonates including CPAPs and ventilators. After seeing these machines, I spent the rest of my week researching how nurses would observe oxygen saturation levels and deliver oxygen in the past. I also researched newer non invasive techniques that are being used today.

The other part of my internship included observing the general care of a baby in the CCN including feeding and the Care checks that nurses do every three hours. I observed how the RN assessed the babies and then charted their stats after each care check.

The rest of my week consisted of volunteering in the emergency department at YRMC west campus.

I'm so excited to see where this research leads. It sounds like you are getting a ton of hands on experience at your site. That is awesome!

Did they talk about current struggle in that area? I know recently some studies were done on how melanin impacts the O2 sensors, so it would be interesting to see how these overlap

This is sounding really intriguing, Zoey! I'm curious to know about what your volunteer work looks like at the YRMC West Campus. What kinds of things are you doing there in the emergency department?

This sounds fascinating! It's amazing nowadays what we are able to do to help babies who desperately need it. What did you do while volunteering at the west campus after your work in the CCN?

This sounds so awesome! What an amazing experience to be able to see in person how the things you research are being put to use in the real world. Was it ever emotionally challenging/difficult for you to be in the room when a nurse would intervene to help a baby or did the excitement help combat that?

The most difficult part for me was when I watched the nurse preform tests/exams on the baby and the baby would cry because of it. They weren't necessarily in pain, but just didn't like the experience. Hearing them cry is difficult, but I just remind myself that they are there to help make the baby better and that tends to help.

I am definitely getting a lot of experience being able to observe how the nurses care for premature babies in the level 2 NICU and it is really cool to be able to see the technology I am learning about being used in real life.
