INTRO: Starting from Scratch

Nathan S -

Hi!

My name is Nathan, and I am a senior at BASIS Prescott. I am going to be interning at Bent River Machine to learn how to create a product from scratch. I have always been interested in the way things like this work, so I am very excited to have this opportunity to create myself. It is said that the largest part of the cost of a product is its design, as the complexity of a design can greatly affect the cost of manufacturing. Because of this, an engineer’s ability to design with an understanding of manufacturing and with those processes in mind can be very valuable to companies. At Bent River Machine, I hope to be able to better understand all of the parts of that process, from manufacturing to assembly and controls engineering, to know how to better design products so that they work well in all steps of the process. I will eventually have created a part from scratch at Bent River, as part of one of their larger products, that will go on to be produced and used in the real world for a large and innovative company. My goal is to foster an understanding of the importance and impact of designing for cost.

Hi Nathan! I can’t believe you are going to be creating your own part, that’s so cool and I can’t wait to see how you do it. Do you know what the part you create is going to be used for?

As someone who's also interested in engineering, I'm excited to see how it goes. I used associate engineering with the actual building of parts and not so much the designing. I'm intrigued to see what you find out about this looked over step!
