Going by a New Name – Blog 6

Moorea C -

Hi everyone! As always I hope ya’ll are having a wonderful day 🙂 This week I focused on finishing up my curriculum and got a chance to introduce myself to the kiddos and sit in on their math/science classes!

Before I get into my time spent in the classroom, I’m going to talk a little bit about my curriculum. I have created my Do Now and Exit Ticket, the lesson, most of the visual aid, the short stories, the pre-test/post-test, individual activity, and most of my group activity. I designed the curriculum keeping two intentions in mind. The first being that the students are given the materials in a manner that allows for a slow buildup of knowledge to hopefully help with their full comprehension of the topic, and the second being that each new material is re-emphasizing the three learning objectives I mentioned last week to allow for better retention when it comes time for the test. The curriculum was also designed with lots of color, pictures, and hands on opportunities to help with general engagement in the topic.

As for my time spent in the classroom, I got to sit in on both 2nd and 3rd grade math/science classes and help out around the room. One of the most interesting parts of this experience was getting used to going by a new name of Ms. Camero in the classroom instead of going by my first name like usual. Even though it was difficult to get used to, going by a formal Ms. name is important so that the students can gain an understanding that when I go in to teach, their attention and respect is expected same as it would be for their real teachers at school. The reason I went with my last name is simply because my first name is hard to spell and pronounce so Camero is just easier for the students to get used to hearing and saying. Even though the name change was crazy for me, the best part of this experience was getting to interact with the students and help teach in a real classroom. I was able to get a feel for how each set of students interact in the classroom and was able to talk with and help almost every student which gave me insight into their personalities and learning preferences. Not only did I come out of this experience with new knowledge on how to teach, but I was also able to reaffirm that teaching elementary is the right career path for me which is awesome! Unfortunately the snow day didn’t allow for me to go into the classroom a second time on Friday, but I am hoping that after spring break I can go in for a few more days.

Overall, this week went really well and I was able to accomplish a lot! Thank you for reading and see you next week!

That's awesome that you got some time in the classroom! Do you anticipate having any challenges when you go in to teach them?

Good work, Ms. Camero! I never thought about how using "Ms." or a last name can help differentiate you from the kids. Your materials look good so far.

I love that you were able to interact with kids in the classroom and how it reinforced your love of teaching! Those gifts they gave you are so sweet. Your curriculum looks amazing and perfect for kids! Are you changing the lesson or how you are teaching it depending on the grade level?

Wow Moorea! It must have been weird to be the one making the Do Nows and exit tickets, instead of the one doing them! I also think that it is really great that you have been able to get practical experience by being in the classroom, especially since that is something you want to keep doing after college. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the question Zoey! The biggest challenge I anticipate having is just trying to figure out how to manage the classroom. I've never been in charge of such a big group of students before so it's a bit intimidating but the students are pretty excited for me to teach which I'm hoping will help keep them focused.

That's a great question Skylar! The lesson is pretty much the same except for a few small changes more just in the vocabulary I will be using while I teach and in the materials to make it easier for 2nd grade comprehension.

Yes, it was definitely a surreal feeling to be making the materials for class instead of completing them myself!

    Thank you Ben!

Wow this is super incredible! It's so great to see that the classroom is definitely one of the places you shine. Just looking at your curriculum materials, I know that seven-year-old-me would love your lesson and learn a lot--just like I do now. Great job, Moorea!

Is it like anything like what you learned? Have your learned experiences gone into it at all? It's great that you're finally in front of the kids. I hope it goes well.

Thank you Ivy, that means a lot!

Great question J! I would say my experience has gone into it in the sense that when I was creating everything, I made sure to think back to my time in those grades when I was learning about environmental science in my Montessori school. I don't remember exactly what the lessons were but just taking my experience being that young learning similar topics has helped me create this curriculum.
