Closing the Final Chapters

Skylar C -

Welcome to the official last week of my project! I am still planning on going into the library next week and will probably make another blog post, so not the actual end, but close! This week I went in the library for my normal hours and continued working on the binders, and I am happy to say that I am officially on the second to last binder, the one covering the years 2009-2015. Besides the library, at home I continued working on my presentation and pamphlet. I am hoping to be complete them mostly next week and start rehearsals for my presentation.

I was able to find some really interesting articles this week that I loved. One was a photo from the library’s Hunger Games event in 2012. They held this on the day the first movie was set to come out, and this photo shows a “Battle to the Death”. It looks so fun and the perfect way to celebrate the first movie and the books! I just wish I could have been there. Another cool article I found was about a program in 2010 called Paws to Read that invited kids to read to dogs in order to help encourage and grow their reading skills. This is so adorable to me as I love both dogs and books, and it is a perfect way to get kids more into reading. Included in the article is a cute photo of a boy reading to an attentive dog. I also found an article about a display showcasing the contents of a 1962 time capsule in 2012. The display included a tape recorder, photos around Prescott, some toys, and a lot more. It is crazy to see how life has changed over just 50 years.

The last article I will talk about is one about the Prescott Hotshots, written in 2014, which discusses making an online collection to showcase items and remember the fallen. There was a Tribute Fence filled with items like clothing or photos memorializing the tragedy, and the Tribute Fence Preservation Project was working with the Prescott Library and something called the Arizona Memory Project, which is a project that strives to preserve Arizona history, in order to create this virtual exhibition to showcase items from the fence. My advisor actually told me about this and showed me the Hotshots collection on the Arizona Memory Project website. She said that that is what they hope to do with the library’s own files. I included the link to this collection and the Arizona Memory Project website below for anyone if they wanted to look it over. I really admire everyone’s commitment to preserving these memories and remembering the heroes lost in the tragedy.

This week I was only able to get two stamps in my passport, but I should easily be able to get more. The ones I got were to show library staff your library card and to tell them the name of the automated materials handler, Lucy. One of the stamps I got is I believe supposed to be the date of the opening of the current Prescott Public Library building, all the way back in 1975!
