Blog 10: Putting the Final Touches…
So as it turns out, I am even more indecisive than I thought! I spent the week working mostly on logo design, aside from the time I spent at Sadie’s. I have been through so many ideas and have gone between wordmark and pictorial mark logo types. Wordmark logos are logos that focus on font and style to make it recognizable, like Coca-Cola or FedEx. A pictorial mark logo is a logo like Twitter or Target where their brand is identified by an image or icon. I have pages and pages of sketches with different fonts and icons. I keep telling myself I’ll decide, but then I turn around and decide that I don’t like any of the ideas I’ve come up with. With all that said, I definitely need to decide. I think I have it down to a few options, which I will include below. Many of you have mentioned that you like the snail icon, and I’m starting to rethink my decision not to use it. I also explored more variations of another icon depicting a Chinese red packet with the geometric hand heart inside of it, but some people have said that it looks a bit like a poke ball, so I may not stick with it. In any case, I have to make a decision so that I can get my T shirts and brand book made.
Speaking of brand books, I actually got to work on two brand books at Sadie’s this week, which have been great preparation for my own brand book. Like Tim’s brand book for Organic Grains, the two that I worked on included fonts, primary and secondary logos, color palettes, and more. For one of these, I was reformatting it from a portrait to a landscape format, and the other was compiled using a Canva template. It’s really cool getting to work at a local design company because I get to do projects for people and places in town that I’m already familiar with. For example, one of these brand books was for Yavapai College, and I designed a flyer for a concert that Arlene Hardy is putting on for her Yavapai Youth Choirs. My mom has been playing piano for Arlene’s concerts for years, so this was especially intriguing to me. When they sent me the resources for the flyer, I texted my mom to ask if she was playing for that concert. She said she only plays for the adult choirs, but it is still a pretty crazy connection!
Finally, I finished the book that I started at the beginning of this project called Steal Like and Artist. Overall, an incredible read that taught me a lot about how to get better in any field, but especially art and design. He teaches that influence is an active process, not a passive one. If you want to be influenced by someone, you have to go looking for it and not just wait for it to pass you by. With that, this is goodbye for my blog, and I will see whoever attends my presentation with my final logo and product. Can’t wait to show you all the ins and outs of the last ten weeks–it has been an incredible experience!
