What I Got Out Of This Project
In this post I want to talk about the different things I got out of this project. Going into this project, my main goal was just to learn about school counseling but I ended up with so much more than that.
One of the biggest things I got out of this project is connections with people in the field. I had interviews with ten different school counselors and school psychologists in Arizona and half of them encouraged me to reach out if I need anything later on in my career. It helps to have people who I know I could go to especially this early in my psychology journey. Psychology is a field where internships, research, and connections are vital to build a career so this is one of the many ways this project is preparing me for my future.
This project has also opened my eyes to the different paths I could take within mental health counseling in schools. Through my interviews and working with my on-site advisor, I’ve been able to learn about different positions like school counselors, school psychologists, and social workers. I’ve been able to learn about how many different people play a role in this system.
I’ve also been able to learn about different techniques within school counseling. This knowledge came partially from my interviews, but mainly from interning under my on-site advisor. Helping her brainstorm counseling activities as well as hearing her talk about activities she’s done and evaluations she’s held has given me lists I can use later on in my career.
Overall, this project has brought me so much and I’m so glad I was given the opportunity to do this research.
