Week 3 Update

Caitlin E -

Hello everyone!

My work for this week looked quite different from prior weeks. With the senior trip taking place from Monday until Wednesday, I was not able to finish as much work as I would have liked. Additionally, my project underwent a couple of significant changes since my last post. Since my site advisor, Dr. Schrauwen, is out of town at the moment, I am working under the mentorship of her colleague, Dr. Acharya. Aside from this change in mentorship, I have completed all of my hours online this week. My project focuses on data analysis rather than experimental research, making it adaptable across multiple platforms; however, distractions at home sometimes make it difficult to manage my progress on my project. Next week, I plan to resume in-person visits to my site placement.

So far, I have encountered a few challenges when trying to analyze the result files I have received. One of the most important issues I had to address was how to interpret the results themselves. In some of the files I opened, I was initially unsure of what I was reading. I assumed there was some sort of formatting issue, as I didn’t understand the figures presented to me and what they represented. Thankfully, with the help of multiple sources, I was able to overcome that obstacle and I am now more certain of what I am reading in the reports. Now that I can comprehend the result files and their meanings, I hope to unveil a genetic diagnosis from the cases I am analyzing. I am looking forward to developing this project further, and I am excited to continue learning more about how artificial intelligence can shape genetic research!

Hi Caitlin, great to see that you are problem solving. What resources have been helpful in deciphering the data?

HI Caitlin. I know it is frustrating to encounter challenges when doing research however, it is giving you great, real experience! Keep up the good work.

Hi Ms. Bennett. Some resources that have been helpful in deciphering the data have been past literature and genomic databases. Past literature has helped me understand the labels of each file, and genomic databases provide extra information on variants and phenotypes.
