Week 3- Changes to the Survey and Content Analysis

Anagha N -

Hi everyone!

Welcome back. After speaking with Dr. Rai and Dr. Goodwin, I have made some changes to my survey and changed the rubric that I will be using for my content analysis. For the survey questions, I will include questions about vaccination titers because their purpose is to inform the vet about vaccine effectiveness and the pet’s vaccination status and immunity. Consequently, the use of titers can increase costs when vaccinating pets. Asking about vaccination titers is important because it will show whether pet owners are aware of its purpose and the other miscellaneous costs that come with vaccinating their pet. Additionally, another suggestion Dr. Rai gave was to ask how confident pet owners are in getting information from professional like vets. Lastly, I want to ask questions that test whether pet owners are aware of some of the negative effects of vaccinations. This is an important question because one concern about vaccinations is that it could exacerbate pre-existing health issues. I am currently working on creating questions that address these topics and I will finalize the survey this weekend so I can give it out next week. That is all the updates for the survey.

For the rubric, I am going to remove column 5 and change the scale from 1-5 to 1-4. This is because there may be a tendency for me to select the middle category while grading sources when other categories are available. Additionally, some of the descriptions for column 4 and 5 overlapped. To prevent any confusion, it was best to remove the last column. So this is how the rubric looks now.

The content analysis method is finalized and by the end of this week the survey will be too. The next three weeks will be focused on collecting survey responses and grading various sources using the rubric.

That’s all for now. See you next week.

Hi Anagha, it is great that you are adjusting your tool as your dive deeper into your research. Can you clarify, what is a vaccination titer?

Hi Mrs. Bennett! Thank you for the question. A titer is a number that measures the number of antibodies in the blood. This number shows whether the pet has enough immunity against a certain disease. If the number is high, the pet has enough immunity against the disease and doesn't need the vaccination. If it is low, then the pet does not have immunity against it and may need the vaccine if the owner agrees to it. While the number tells the vet what vaccines the pet needs or doesn't need, it can be very expensive.
