Week 2

Marcos V -

Hello and welcome to week 2 of my project!

Since my last post I’ve been working hard on putting together a detailed roadmap for the progression of my project. I’ve also started looking at large public datasets from which to pull data for my analysis. Large telescopes, such as ALMA in the Atacama Desert of Chile and the Very Large Array in New Mexico, publish much of their data for free use. Their observations cover a significant portion of the night sky, so I should have no trouble finding data for my specific system.

It’s difficult to start writing my final paper before I even start my analysis, but I’ve begun looking into formatting and outlines so that I am prepared to start as soon as I can, as I anticipate it’ll take up a lot of time later on.

For now I am very much still in the preliminary phase, but next week I should start putting together some data and sharing with you some more interesting findings. That’s all I have for now. Thanks for reading!

Hi Marcos, that is so cool that both of the telescopes share so much data! Why do you think they make it available to the public?

Marcos, I’m looking forward to watching your progress as you move from gathering data to the final written paper. I also think it’s great that you can gather information from a telescope as far away as Chile!

Hi Ms. Bennett, great question! Telescopes gather a massive amount of data, mostly for research such as mine. Gathering data for a project can be difficult, so when a research team is finished with their project, they often release the data publicly so that other scientists can use it for their own research, instead of making them go through the process of gathering the same data every time.
