Week 10

Marcos V -

Hello and welcome to week 10 of my senior project!

As the project comes to a close, I want to discuss something that I’ve been sort of putting off until the end. I’ve just now gotten together my ideas for my final product. This can be anything from a formal research paper to a marketable product to a piece of art, and I have been very unsure how I want to approach it.

Considering my talents outside of academia, I decided that my final product would be a combination of visual art and poetry. I want to convey not only my process and journey over the course of the senior project, but also the various emotions that went along with that process.

As the main artistic appeal of the piece will be in the text and physical arrangement, I feel I can describe my ideas here without giving too much away. The title of the piece (at least for now) is “aesthetics of a dying star.” It will be composed of a free standing black trifold poster that will serve as the background. I will splatter this with white paint to depict a starry sky. Then, in the center, I will create an artistic representation of the V Hydrae system, plasma outflows included, using deliberately placed words. These words will form three poems, all under a larger theme: one for the central star, one for its binary companion, and one for the plasma outflows. I hope to evoke in the audience the same sense of sublime wonder that I get when I look at this beautiful system. I also want to introduce a surreal, fragmented feeling through the arrangement of words on the poster. If anyone is familiar with Mark Z. Danielewski’s House of Leaves, which notoriously plays with formatting to an absurd degree, I want to produce that same strange feeling of witnessing something alien and incomprehensible.

I am very excited to create this piece, and I hope you all enjoy it when it is ready! You will be able to see it when I present my project on Thursday, April 24th. As always, thank you for reading, and feel free to ask any questions you may have, about either my project or my art piece.
