Visiting Residents and Obtaining Consent
Hello again! This week has been exciting and eventful, as I visited Dr. L and the residents at Paseo Village for the first time last Thursday. The day began with a staff meeting that I had the opportunity to observe, during which Dr. L spoke with the nurses about how each resident was doing, discussed any abnormal behaviors that were occurring, and addressed the concerns of the families, the residents, and the nurses. Once the meeting was completed, Dr. L brought me to The Crossings, the unit at Paseo Village that hosts the residents who present with behaviors. I enjoyed speaking to many of them, explaining my project in simple terms, and even obtaining consents from a few of the residents. Additionally, I obtained consent from a public fiduciary for a few of the residents.
Yesterday, I visited Fairmont Village for the first time. Unlike Paseo Village, where all the rooms were outdoors and led to a large grass courtyard in the center of the facility, Fairmont Village had a layout more similar to that of a large hotel, in which the rooms were indoors within a large building. Like Paseo Village, Fairmont also had its own behavioral unit, called The Meadows. Again, my day began with attending a staff meeting with Dr. L, during which she reviewed the nurses’ concerns, and even discussed changing the layout of the facility to better support its residents. I spent time speaking with some of the residents who seemed interested in the study and have contacted a few guardians, so they can sign the consent forms on behalf of their resident.
After this week, I will have gained an initial patient population for my study, and although I will continue to work on obtaining consent forms from residents to expand my sample size, I can now begin to administer the language assessments and start my study. I will be going into Paseo Village again this Thursday, during which I will begin working with the few residents that I have gained consent from. I am planning on spending 10 to 20 minutes with each resident, based on whether or not they will be listening to music prior to the examination, as well as how receptive and attentive they are to the questions and directions given to them. I am looking forward to finally being able to dive into the deep end of my project and am beyond excited to see what the future holds!
