SRP update #7

Jonathan C -

Just today, I’ve had a sudden shift from my original plans. Originally, my project was about investigating the relation between ATF6 and ANP in contracting cardiovascular diseases. I was planning to choose specifically Atrial Fibrillation as my cardiovascular disease of choice to research. However, I am now researching the detection of ANP and ANP secretion in atrial cells. I just put in the change request to Mrs. Bennett today, so the official title and description on the site should change soon. To sum up my new objective, we are surgically extracting the atria from mice, and using that atrial tissue to measure the amount of ANP in the cells as well as the amount of ANP secreted during induced hypertension. The significance in this research is because hypertension can lead to a variety of different cardiovascular diseases. As such, researching the correlation between ANP secretion and contracting cardiovascular diseases is the start of some revolutionary research in the field of cardiology.

I will have my first lab session this Friday before my weekly lab meeting. My sub-mentor is Sarah Green who will be helping me with this lab research, of course under the supervision of Dr. Glembotski as well.

Hi Jonathan, glad you are remaining flexible with the process. Are there some specific reasons behind this shift in focus?

Hi Jonathan, it is so cool you are studying cardiovascular disease! Is there any part of this new project that you are most excited about?

Thank you for the question Ms. Bennett. The reason behind this shift in focus was for 2 main reasons. Although I really enjoyed studying up on AFib, the reasons behind my switch were the timeframe and my mentor. Dr. Glembotski assigned me a sub mentor to work with, but unfortunately her research had nothing to do with my desired topic. My only choices were to apply what I would be doing in her lab into my project, which is pretty unrealistic, or be flexible and change my project topic. The second reason was the timeframe. Since I took a really long time to actually get into the lab, my project which should've taken at least 4 weeks would have had to be completed within the span of 2 weeks. It is a bit unfortunate that I could not research the topic of my choice, but this was the best option for me and my project. Thank you for the question!

Hi Adam. What I am most excited about for this project going forward is the opportunity to get engaged with lab research. Since I have minimal past research experience, this experience is very exciting for me. After seeing the procedure that my sub mentor, Sarah Green, has provided me, I am definitely very excited to do some western blotting which I have been allowed to participate in. This is overall a very good experience for me to learn more about cardiology, and it is an amazing opportunity to work hands on in the lab. Thanks for the question!
