SRP update #6

Jonathan C -

Hello all,

With the completion of my curriculum and my lab training, I have a little over a month left to finally start research. I am set to have a mentor (other than Dr. Glembotski) by this friday. Until then, I have begun a bit of self study into Atrial Fibrillation, a cardiovascular disease and the main part of my senior research project. As the title of my project suggest, my goal is to figure out if ATF6 and ANP have a role in contracting cardiovascular diseases, my disease of choice being atrial fibrillation. I am very excited to figure out who my mentor will be on Friday.

Right now, I have simply studied up on how atrial fibrillation works, with a stress on its causation. With the help of the curriculum, this self study is a breeze. I look forward to presenting my findings, and thank you for reading my week 6 update.

Hi Jonathan, I'm glad you're so excited about your project! What's the most interesting fact you've learned about atrial fibrillation thus far?

Hi Jonathan, can you share a bit more about what atrial fibrillation is?

Hi Jonathan, this sounds like an interesting project! Could you share a little about the causes of atrial fibrillation and how your project ties in on a deeper level to that?

Hello all , thank you for all the questions. It seems like everyone has the same question roughly so I will address this in 1 comment. As I am answering this a couple weeks in the future, I've just realized that my project unexpectedly has nothing to do with atrial fibrillation anymore, but I am still glad to answer your questions. I mainly read up on what atrial fibrillation (AFib) is, and the causes and symptoms. AFib is an, often rapid, arrythmia. It is of course a type of cardiovascular disease and the most common form of treatment so far is anticoagulants, more modern versions being oral anticoagulants. What my plan was before my topic switched was to study AFib in depth, and learn how ANP and ATF6 related to causing AFib, as ANP and ATF6 have been researched to have some correlation, whether causative or responsive, to cardiovascular diseases. I would then go on to extrapolate this data to a larger set of cardiovascular diseases. Once again, my project topic has changed since then, but thank you all for the questions.
