Second Update – Initial Data

Ryan S -

Hello everyone!

Today was my first official meeting with my site placement, and also my first opportunity to gather data. After sitting down and meeting with my site advisor, I was able to speak with instructors themselves and begin asking questions regarding their training. I started by talking with 2 instructors, asking how their personal training has gone and if they had any advice to give to their students/future students. The main central theme in responses was to:

1) Find what works for you. Everyone has a different method to best absorb and understand information. The earlier you’re able to fully understand all information thrown at you regarding aviation, the better.

2) Practice as much as you can. Don’t just focus on aviation when you are meeting with your instructor. Live and breathe aviation as much as you can, especially when you are first starting out.

3) Teach others! Don’t just listen to what the instructor says and write notes. Make an attempt to teach someone else the information, whether they know it or not, or even try to teach the information back to the instructor.

These three things are a great starting point to my project, and I hope to pursue these topics in further depth as time goes on and I meet more at my site placement. As I’ve been at my site, I have also seen new instructors in training classes (current pilots wishing to teach others, going through a class to be qualified instructors), and I hope to be able to speak to some of them about their training.

(Apologies for the late post)
