Ready S.E.T. Go!
Hey everyone!
My name is Koushita Valluru and I’m a senior at BASIS Phoenix. This blog post is going to be a quick overview of what I hope for my senior project, S.E.T. In: Sex Education Transformation in India, to look like.
Imagine a society where the concept of “purity” defines your worth, where silence surrounds sex, and ignorance fuels stigma.
This isn’t fiction, but reality for many in India, a nation grappling with the urgent need for sex education.
I witnessed firsthand the devastating consequences of misinformation and social stigma surrounding sex. This ignited a passion to explore a critical question: what curricula could India use to teach sex education to bridge the gap between the cultural/religious sector and education sector?
My senior research project delves into this complex landscape. Driven by personal stories like that of a 16-year-old ostracized for having HIV, I embark on a mission to understand the historical shift from a sexually aware society to one fixated on purity. By analyzing existing research and cultural nuances, I explore the feasibility of integrating age-appropriate, culturally sensitive sex education modules into the national curriculum.
Through this blog you can follow my journey as I navigate the ever-evolving social landscape.
A journey about human rights. India, despite being a founding member of the United Nations, fails to fully implement article 26, which guarantees every child the right to education about their own bodies and sexuality. This research is not just a personal quest, but a fight for equity, well-being, and informed decision-making.
As Lao Tzu said “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” and this is my first step.
Thank you for reading!
