Just Keep Swimming! (Getting Through All the Articles)

Mihika G -

Welcome or welcome back to my blog! As I touched on briefly in my last post, my main focus for the time being is just getting through all the articles, pulling key quotes, and then writing notes on my findings.

This is just how I’ve been organizing my work. I’m going through all the articles by the month, making five main time periods: July 2024, August 2024, September 2024, October 2024, November 2024. July and November will both be a little shorter, however, due to the overall project timeframe being between July 21. 2024 and November 5, 2024. I wonder if I can identify any rhetorical shifts between these months; if not, no worries, since my project’s conclusions don’t depend on this. To avoid any missed content, I’ve been taking note of any quote or language that could be perceived as bias, with the intention of doing the same for Trump’s side of the analysis. Again, keeping in mind that the NYT generally has an unfavorable view on Trump, I seek to determine what topics are the spotlight of discussion for both candidates. As you can see above, a large portion of the articles already use non-policy based ideas when discussing Harris’s viability as a candidate and the growth of her platform.

The conclusions thus far are consistent with my initial hypothesis, but I want to stay away from making any premature judgements before analyzing the Trump end of the data, because my project is truly rooted in the comparison between the two, and it would be difficult to claim there is solid evidence of bias while only having looked at one side.

Hi Mihika, looks fascinating. Have you found that the gender of the author plays into bias towards the candidate?

Have you come across any specific trends in how the media discusses the candidates' policies and ideas? For example, do you notice the media focusing more on the policy aspects of Kamala Harris's campaign compared to other elements, like her background or personality?

Thank you Ms. Bennett. Author bias is actually not something I had considered studying when engaging in my research! I had wanted to focus more specifically on the content being published. However, as my project continues to develop, this might be something I include in my final data.

Hi Rahul, great question! I delve into the specifics of this a little more in my latest blog post, but to summarize: I have found, thus far, that there seems to be a large focus on Harris's personal branding and public image. It's hard to make an objective comparison without having done the same analysis for Trump, so when I finish that side as well, I will have a more defined statement!
