Just Do (Capture) It.
Tanay N -
Hello everyone! With this being my last blog post, I wanted to first take a moment to share with you all the bigger picture of my project.
Aether is less than $50 to make. This means that anyone, anywhere can gain access to climate education. What we need in the fight for a better planet is more scientists, more researchers, more thinkers to build projects to combat climate change. An Aether unit in every school around the world can achieve this goal. If we combine Aether’s accessibility with Sapling’s groundbreaking technology, then hopefully we can imagine a future where every home has their own Aether.
I can’t thank my faculty mentor Ms. Holtzman enough for all her time, guidance, and support with Aether! She let me use her classroom’s lab tables as well as the chemicals from her lab; I couldn’t have done this without her.
I’d also like to take a moment to thank my site mentor Mr. Matthew Ryan at the Center for Negative Carbon Emissions at Arizona State University. He took countless hours out of his time to help me learn how to use Sapling so that I would be able to independently conduct experiments. Sometimes, we even ended up working a 9-5 for 3 weeks in a row, and I’m eternally grateful for his support!
I’d also like to thank BASIS.ed, BASIS Phoenix, Ms. Bennett, Ms. Rothschild, and Ms. Slayton for giving me the opportunity to conduct this project and share my passion for sustainable technologies with you all!
In the coming weeks after my presentation, I will be working at the Center for Negative Carbon Emissions to continue my work. Additionally, the myriads of challenges I faced forced me to think outside of the box (both literally and figuratively), and I believe it truly enhanced my experience so much more! Because of all this, I’m motivated to continue researching Direct Air Capture over the summer and in college in addition to the coming weeks.
My final product is a poster and Aether. You can view an image of the poster below.
I hope to someday make Aether “kits” with a safer sorbent to spread climate science to as many children as possible. Thank you all for following me along this journey and I can’t wait to present for you all later today!

From the bottom of my heart, Thank You.
