Welcome! Introduction: Short-term Therapeutic Effect of Music

Aashi H -

Hey everyone! My name is Aashi Hemdev, and welcome to my blog. Thank you so much for joining me on this senior project journey!

I have been playing in band since 6th grade. Since then, it has helped me connect with myself and others emotionally, mentally, and socially. I decided early on that I wanted my project to be about the therapeutic use of music, and how music can benefit others in the same magnitude that it helped me.

Therefore, my research project aims to study the “Short-term Therapeutic Effects of Music in Dental Patients.” My site placement is at the MIM.

Since August, my project has gone through a lot of changes. My idea of studying the therapeutic effects of music has stayed constant, but I have been struggling to find a clinic that would allow me to do my research. I have been looking at chemotherapy and chronic pain clinics, and after I turned my attention to dental patients. My backup option is to study psychologists or post my studies online.

My study consists of a patient filling out two questionnaires and listening to 10-15 minutes of their favorite genre. After giving consent, a patient will fill out the first questionnaire with their preferred genre of music, contact information, and a psychological test for anxiety. Then, they will listen to a pre-made Spotify playlist of music from their preferred genre. Lastly, they will complete a post-questionnaire of the same psychological test, the emotions post-listening, and additional information.

I hope to see a statistically significant difference between the results of the pre and post-questionnaires. I will be working with Dr. Goodwin and Mr. Bushee, as well as psychologist Dr. Kumar from Banner at the University of Arizona.

Feel free to comment with any questions you have and I’ll be happy to respond. Once, again, welcome, and thank you for joining me on this exciting musical journey! See you next week.
