Introduction- Pet Vaccinations

Anagha N -

Hi. My name is Anagha Nair, and I am a senior at Basis Phoenix. My research project is focused on the veterinary field. My interest in animal biology and behavior originated from books and National Geographic, and my interest in animal care grew after shadowing at my local vet clinic. Because of my interest in this field, I am looking for ways to improve the accessibility of pet health information.

An important aspect of animal care is communication between the vet and pet owner. The vet’s expertise is what bridges the gap between a pet’s needs and an owner’s concern. However, vets are often busy with back-to-back appointments. Consequently, many resources have been created to inform pet owners. But in the sea of articles, blog posts, and pamphlets, information about pet health often doesn’t reach its audience. Sometimes it’s the medical jargon, the lack of sources on a specific topic, or conflicting information that prevents accessibility. This leads to confusion for pet owners and conflict between them and the veterinarian during checkups. My research study aims to tackle the issue of pet owner literacy and the communication gap between vets and clients by finding out what pet owners misunderstand or don’t know about a specific aspect of veterinary medicine, vaccinations. This study will specifically focus on pet vaccinations because this is a common point of tension due to vaccine hesitancy and lack of accessible information. Once I find what pet owners misunderstand about vaccines, I will see how that affects the relationship between the vets and clients and how pet owner literacy can be improved. I will be conducting my research at Sugarloaf Animal Clinic while shadowing Dr. Rai.

Through this research project, I hope to contribute to my field of interest by creating a helpful resource for pet owners.

Hi Anagha! This project sounds very interesting! I'm curious to know, do you plan on distributing some kind of survey to the pet owners at the animal clinic. If so, what kinds of questions do you have in mind for the survey?

Yes, I will be creating a survey and giving it to clients who come in for routine checkups. The survey will have questions that ask about pet insurance plans, vaccine hesitancy, pet owners' perceptions of vaccines and more. I will share the specific survey questions in my next blog post. Thank you for your question.
