Chapter 2: How did I pick this particular topic?
Good Morning Everyone!
Welcome to chapter 1 of my research project! This week has been pretty slow for me; I have just been getting all the materials ready so that I can start at my site placement next week. I will be volunteering at Guidepost Montessori at North Scottsdale for my senior research project. Here, I will be working with babies, toddlers, and children of all ages. And because of how young the population is, I am required to get a negative TB test and a fingerprint clearance card from the Arizona Department of Public Safety, so I am just waiting on the pending approval. Once everything is good to go, I will be going into the Montessori school to be trained.
In this blog post, I will also be answering the question of: How did you come across Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome and how did you decide to do this as a project?
To be honest, I came across Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome completely by accident. At the beginning of the year, I started volunteering at a NICU and one of the nurses there told me about this issue because that week they had almost 4 NAS admits. Before learning about Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, it did not even come to my mind that pregnant women could take drugs and this would influence the baby. After further research on NAS, I realized this topic fits perfectly in our current circumstances with the opioid epidemic in the United States and decided to do my project on Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. However, as I am not old enough to work with the NAS babies themselves, I decided to focus on the nurses that work with this population. That’s all for this week.
