Take 6

Ayushi Y -

Hello Everyone!

This week I will discuss how the films, The Dark Knight and Perfume: The Story of a Murderer contribute to mental health stigma. As I looked for articles regarding the Joker’s connection to mental health in The Dark Kight, I found a similar trend to the American Psychopath articles; There were many different opinions regarding his diagnosis. The variety of diagnoses I found included Dissociative Identity Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder, Schizophrenia, and one article even said that he doesn’t have a mental illness at all. The Joker is a violent and unstable character, and associating his name with a variety of illnesses leads viewers to unwittingly associate these conditions with aggressive habits.

You can read more about mental illness in The Dark Knight on these websites:

Perfume: A Story of a Murderer is more difficult to understand in terms of diagnoses since the movie is a fantasy movie about a serial killer. In this case, the movie creates distance between society and those with mental illness. Jean Baptiste Grenouille, the main character/ the killer, is described as a tick (since ticks use scents to find blood) and as a toad. These descriptions label him as inhumane and highlight his predatory nature. Connecting such connotations to mental health causes society to increasingly perceive those with mental illness as violent and further separates such individuals from society.

You can read more about this in these articles:

Thank you for reading this week’s blog post!

Hi Ayushi! I love that you were able to make connections between the trends in the films! Do you believe that the second movie being a fantasy movie might affect the data you’re collecting?

Hi Ayushi! When doing these analyses, what mental health disorder as a diagnosis shows up the most? Do you think people tend to immediately assume 1 of 3-4 disorders when associating these behaviors to mental issues.

Hello Ayushi! I was wondering wether jokers case is similar the one of jinx in arcane? Exhibiting different traits of many different psychological disease but not having 1 distinct disorder

Hi Ayushi, it looks like you are definitely touching on the fact psychological diagnoses can be much more nuanced than the representations in media. I am also interested in how movie genre may impact the representations.

Hey Koushita! The second film being a fantasy definitely skewed my data a bit since I was trying to focus on psychological thriller films for my data collection. However, I was able to gain some useful insight from that movie as well so I'm glad I watched it.

Hey Sowmithra! Antisocial Personality Disorder is probably the most common diagnosis that shows up when watching these movies but most of the other personality disorders in Cluster B come pretty close so Borderline, Histrionic, and Narcissistic personality disorder are also common diagnoses.

Hello! I would assume that it is a similar scenario to that character since the different diagnoses of the Joker are caused by him having multitude of symptoms of different disorders

Hello Ms. Bennett! Movie genres definitely affect the way that mental health is portrayed. I have not watched many movies with other genres and Perfume ended up being a bit of a surprise since my plan was to focus on psychological thrillers. What I did see though that it is a lot harder to portray and analyze a character that is mentally ill in fantasy since you have to distinguish between what is real and fake.
