Project Title: An Analysis of the Effect of Artificial Intelligence Chatbots on High School Students
BASIS Advisor: Suzanne Ungar
Internship Location: Independent Project
Onsite Mentor: Emilia Gracia, Senior Global Educator Faculty Mentor

Project Abstract

Given the recent rise of chatbots such as ChatGPT, there has been a growing concern of the usage of these tools in academic environments, specifically high schools. The exploration of how these chatbots are used by high schoolers can provide insight into the future of these tools in educational institutions. Questions important to foundational research in this arena include: What percentage of high school students use ChatGPT and in what capacity? Do high school students believe that it is ethical to use AI tools (such as ChatGPT) to help them with assignments?

  • Conclusion

Hello everyone! This will be my last and final blog post. In this post, I will go over my journey and leave some final thoughts. In the beginning, I had a very clear plan of what I was going to do. I very quickly realized that my plan fell apart when I had trouble getting... Read More

  • Final Product

Hello everyone! Since I practically finished my research last week, I wanted to take some time to talk about my final product. For my final product, I am going to make a poster board. On the poster board I plan to write recommendations for teachers and students on how to deal with AI tools in... Read More

  • Ninth Week: Finishing Survey Analysis

Hello everyone! This week, I've begun the process of wrapping up my research by continuing the data analysis. As part of closing out my project, I've also taken the time to reflect on the entirety of my research journey. • Seventh Week: Survey Analysis

Hello everyone! This week, I've been working on analyzing the survey data. To make the analysis easier, I graphed all the responses from the questions. For the yes or no questions, I used pie charts; for the free response questions, I created bar graphs; and for the questions with a Likert scale, I calculated the... Read More

Hello everyone! I closed the survey last week on Friday and ended with a total of 48 responses. I expected a lot more responses due to the large population size. I feel that filling out a paper consent form might’ve discouraged many students from participating. This week I did some more reading and started to... Read More

Hello everyone! This week, I spent most of my time reading prior research and articles. The survey has been out for 2 weeks now and I am planning on closing it on Friday this week. • Fourth Week: Survey Update

Hello everyone! Last week, the surveys were finally sent out. The survey has been distributed to consenting NHS members at 6 schools; however I still plan on getting 1-2 more schools on board. Since I can only start analyzing survey results after receiving all responses, the survey might be open for another week than expected.... Read More

  • Third Week: Surveys!

Hello everyone! I was out for most of this week due to the senior trip and being sick. This week, the surveys are finally being sent out.
