Project Title: How does independent mastery motivation and socio-emotional development change in children with Down syndrome ages 3-8 after the regular use of adaptive mobility cars?" BASIS Advisor: Amy Anderson Internship Location: Onsite Mentor: Robin Lea-Amos |
Project Abstract
Down syndrome is still one of the least understood genetic intellectual disabilities. Specifically, children with Down syndrome ages 3 and above face numerous complications regarding independent mastery motivation (the psychological force to independently attempt to solve a moderately-challenging problem or master a skill), children with Down syndrome are rated significantly lower on mastery motivation compared to parents of typically-developing children. Consequently, “therapeutic play” is being introduced as a novel method to address such motor and social delays in pediatric populations affected by disability. Within this, the adapted ride-on toy car is developing into a popular method of improving social, motor, and cognitive development. In addition, the car addresses the Down syndrome need for pediatric power mobility devices, which cost thousands of dollars and take years to receive. In fact, this has also been studied amongst children with Down syndrome ages 1-3, demonstrating drastic improvements in social and motor development. However, this study aims to address the absence of research surrounding the effects of ride-on cars on changing independent mastery motivation in children ages 3-8 with Down syndrome, an age range where children are still nurturing vital developmental milestones.
Week 12
Hi everyone! I've now submitted my AP Research paper and completed my presentation, meaning that my AP career has come to a close! To conclude, I wanted to take a moment to thank my in-school mentors, Ms. Anderson and Mrs. Bennett, my out-of-school mentors, Ms. Robin Lea-Amos and Ms. Angela Sherrill at GiGi's Playhouse and... Week 11
Hi everyone! I am very happy to say that I have officially finished my AP Research Presentation and Oral Defense, and am near completion with my AP Research academic paper, which I will be submitting this week. I'll also be presenting my Senior Project on May 9. I've completed my data analysis, meaning that I... Read More
Week 10
Hi everyone! As we enter the waning stages of our Senior Projects, I'm wrapping up my AP presentation as well as my paper submission. I'll present my research for the College Board sometime early next week, and will also be submitting my paper sometime late next week (or perhaps the earlier part of the week... Read More
Week 9
Hey everyone! This past week was a continuation of my final preparation to present my findings. This includes wrapping up my data analysis, comparing my findings to prior literature, and also writing out the limitations, implications, and directions for future research. Regarding the timeline for my research project from now, I'll be presenting my final... Read More
Week 8
Hey everyone! This past week, I completed my data analysis, and also figured out that I will be using the means for each sub-category of the DMQ-18, and finding the standard deviation and 95% confidence intervals for each sub-category as well. I've also attached an image of the data analysis I performed. Regarding my AP... Read More
Week 7
Hey everyone! I held my sixth and final driving session last week. Last week, I concluded the study for remaining 2 kids. The progress that each child has made has truly amazed me, and was frankly something that I had never foreseen. Regarding data analysis, the quantitative part consists of a predetermined method of adding... Read More
Week 6
Hey everyone! I held my fifth driving session last week, where we had all kids show up. Last week, I concluded the study for 2 kids, and conducted the second-to-last driving session for the other 2 participants. As always, I'm amazed by the progress that each participant has made in gaining independence. For the 2... Read More
Week 5
Hi everyone! I held my fourth driving session last week, where we had 2 of 4 kids show up (2 were absent due to sickness). Last week was most definitely a "turning point" (pun intended) for lots of kids, as they began realizing their independent ability to turn the steering wheel while driving. So far,... Read More
Week 4
Hi everyone! I held my third driving session last Wednesday on 2/21, and it was even more successful than Week 3! All 4 families were able to make it to my data collection period. Although I haven’t officially collected any data (with the DMQ-18 and my qualitative survey for the parents) since Week 1, the... Read More

Hi everyone! I held my second driving session last Wednesday, and it was a success! Out of the 4 children participating, 3 showed up (1 could not due to illness). From last week’s session until March 7 (Week 5 session), I will not be assessing any survey or questionnaire; each session will only consist of... Read More
Week 2
Hi everyone! I’ll provide a brief explanation of how I will be conducting my study. A month ago, I invited families who regularly go to GiGi’s Playhouse to participate in this study. My study consists of each child driving their car for 20 minutes per day, once a week, for 6 weeks. Simultaneously, I will... Read More
