Senior Research Projects

The BASIS Charter School Senior Research Project builds on students’ work from the AP Capstone curriculum and supports students’ developing sense of investigation while fostering college-level research skills. Building upon the strong research foundation developed in the AP Seminar course, seniors design, plan, and conduct year-long research projects, applying their knowledge to a real-world problem.

These seniors meet strict criteria throughout the duration of their projects. AP Research (the second course in the AP sequence) requires students to submit a project proposal and literature review, write a 4,000- to 5,000-word academic essay on their chosen topic, and then give a 15- to 20-minute presentation and oral defense. Additionally, over the course of the third trimester, students gain real-world experience at an off-campus research site and share blog entries summarizing their successes and challenges. At the end of the trimester, students return to campus and present an analysis of their findings to peers, staff, and parents.
