Week 1 – Using Drones to Create 3D Structures Dynamically
Yuvan S -
Hello! My name is Yuvan Senthil, and if you know me, I am a really big drone enthusiast. I do everything with drones, from photography to just flying at 80 mph with my drones, and from the title, you can guess that my project will be about drones.
So, I am a Disney movie fan, and when I watched Big Hero 6, I was super intrigued by the robots in the movie. Microbots that can dynamically change and create structures. I was inspired as a child, wanting to build this. So, I took on creating a project to use drones and combine my interests to make this a reality.
I decided on creating cubes that can fly using a drone, and they can connect to create 3D structures. Through my research, I found that no one has done this before, so I wanted to be the first.
Essentially, I was thinking of using magnets to have these drones connect to each other midflight. This would allow me to have a very strong connection between the drones which would allow them to act as a singular structure. Originally, I was going to use an electromagnet to maintain the connection so I can turn off the magnet to disconnect the drones. However, I decided against this because electromagnets are very heavy and its is very power-consuming. I’ve seen the power usage being high in my prior projects. Coming up with how to connect the drones is the first step to this very complex project. Over the next week, I am going to test a model with magnets to see if this works.
