Understanding the Effects of Media Sentiment on Stocks and Businesses
Hey folks! My name is Sai Ganta, and I’m a senior here at Basis Peoria. Over the final 10ish weeks or so of high school, I’ll be spending my time working on my AP Research Project/Senior Research Project. Since my very first economics class in high school, I’ve enjoyed exploring all the nitty-gritty connections you have to make and figuring out how one change can bring about so many more. This interest specifically took a turn towards social phenomena and issues in AP Seminar when I discovered in my research that many companies use FOMO marketing to exploit consumers. This interest has brought me to my current research, where I’ll examine the effects of media sentiment around certain influencer products on how stock prices change.
With this research, I hope to answer my research question: How do customers’ perspectives on the integrity of influencer products change as a result of articles online, what does this mean for the role of online media for businesses?
In order to get a better understanding of the relationship between stock prices and media sentiment, I’ll be looking at three influencer products: Kanye West’s Yeezy’s, Logan Paul and KSI’s Prime Hydration, and Kylie Jenner’s Kylie Cosmetics. Using the stock prices that Yahoo! Finance provides, I’ll be compiling the data and changes in stock prices. To connect the changes in stock price fluctuations to media sentiment, I’ll be looking at 300 articles, which I’ll use to conduct sentiment analysis. I’ll be using Python tools and code to scrape the articles and gather the polarity and subjectivity scores. These scores will establish the media sentiment regarding these products, which will allow me to correlate and observe how effective or strong the correlation is between media sentiment and stock price fluctuations. I’ll be conducting this research under the advisory of Ms. Ainslie, my AP Research teacher.
With this project I hope to not only provide a better understanding of how business success can be influenced by media, but also to better understand how consumer behavior can be affected by media input. These findings can help business shape their marketing strategies to prioritize business growth and their success, and they can help better understand consumer behavior and their approaches to influencer products.
Here, with this blog, I’ll be able to share my results and document my experience as I learn. So, stay tuned until next time.
